Changi Airport in Singapore Installs Steril-Aire System to Enhance Indoor Air Quality

Known as one of the world’s busiest airports, Changi Airport is working to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its more transmissible variants

Recently, Changi Airport in Singapore became one of the latest international transportation hubs to install Steril-Aire’s Ultraviolet-C (UVC) Germicidal Irradiation System as part of a multi-faceted approach to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.

The airport, which typically sees nearly 70 million passengers a year, has long made the health and safety of its passengers a priority. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the ventilation systems within the airport’s passenger terminal buildings were designed to refresh the air every six to 10 minutes, with indoor air within restrooms getting a refresh every three minutes.

Now, Changi Aiport has installed several different filtration systems, including Steril-Aire’s UVC germicidal emitters as well as upgraded Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV) and hospital-grade High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, all of which work together to clean the air, killing and removing 99% of virus particles and other pollutants that may impact indoor air quality (IAQ).

In 2016, Changi Airport Group (CAG) worked with PrimusSoft / PrimusTech to conduct a study investigating the effectiveness of a UVC irradiation system on improving cooling coil performance as well as overall unit energy savings. The study found that Steril-Aire UVC emitters cleaned the cooling coils, ridding them of bacteria and mold, which in turn increased air flow and helped save energy.
